Women's Sports

The number five seed Belmont women’s tennis team fell to the number four seed Campbell 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun Championship held Friday in Johnson City, Tennessee.

In doubles, the Camels won the first point of the match when they picked up wins at the numbers one and two positions. They clinched the match victory when they won at numbers four, five, and six singles.

The Bruins finished their season with an 8-11 overall record and a 4-7 mark in conference.

The Belmont women’s golf team posted their highest finish ever at the Atlantic Sun Championship and had the program’s first two All-Tournament honorees as the conference tournament wrapped up Wednesday afternoon at The Ridges Golf Club in Jonesborough, Tennessee.

On the best weather day of the tournament, the Bruins, who shot 316 in the final round, could not catch up to second place Campbell and finished third with a final team total of 942. It marked the best finish at the conference championship by Belmont since joining the league in 2001. ETSU captured their first conference crown by shooting a 306 on Wednesday to finish at 903. Campbell placed second, posting a 54-hole total of 928.

Individually, two Bruins earned All-Tournament honors by placing in the top-five. Junior Lorie Warren finished tied for second with a 54-hole total of 227 (+11) after posting an 80 on Wednesday. She missed a birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have forced a playoff to determine the individual champion. It was the highest finish ever by a Belmont golfer in the conference championship. Senior Rebekah Wilson closed out her Belmont career in style as she posted a one-over par 73 to finish tied for fifth with a total score of 229. They become the first two All-A-Sun Tournament honorees in the program’s history. The individual medalist for the championship was Laura Jansone of ETSU, who finished at 226.

The three other Belmont golfers all finished among the top-25. Freshman Lauren Spurlock finished in a tie for 15th at 244, while juniors Lauren Oeser and Ashleigh Garman tied for 22nd at 247.

Golf

With a solid performance from top to bottom, Belmont University men’s golf improved to seventh position after day two of the 2008 Atlantic Sun Men’s Golf Championship.

A picturesque, sun-filled day in the Atlanta area made the host Woodlands course at renowned Chateau Elan Resort ripe for scoring. And though the Bruins succumbed to periodic big numbers on the tight 6,735 yard Par 71 layout Monday, fine scores were had.

Junior Danny Amundson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) again paced Belmont, shaking off three early bogeys with birdies on Nos. 8, 9, 14, and 15 in carding an even par round of 71. Amundson is T-15 at 147 (+5).

Sophomore Gaylon Cude (Centerville, Tenn.) had one of his finest collegiate rounds; playing one under par through 13 holes before ultimately carding a three over par 74. He is T-21 at 151 (+9).

Freshman Daniel Smith (Bournemouth, Dorset Co., England) got the Bruins off and running. He recorded four birdies of his own in a one over par round of 72, good enough for T-37 at 156 (+14).

Sophomore Scott O’Brien (Brookings, S.D.) shot a second round 81 to stand T-42 at 158 (+16). Sophomore Stuart Ashwood (Northampton, England) is T-46 at 160 (+18) after shooting 77.

Belmont’s Tuesday team total of 294 (+10) was the fifth-best total of the day, not to mention a staggering 19 shot improvement from day one. BU stands 28 strokes back of overall leader East Tennessee State (579, +11). The Bruins are also just one stroke behind Stetson for sixth position.

Gareth Shaw of East Tennessee State tops the individual leaderboard at 136 (-6).

Baseball

Two RBIs by junior Brandon McCall wasn’t enough to lift the Belmont baseball team as the Bruins dropped their contest against Tennessee Tech, 13-3, at Greer Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. on Tuesday evening.

The loss drops Belmont’s record to 15-24 overall while Tennessee Tech improved to 27-13-1.

Freshman Dane Swinehart started the game for Belmont and went 5.1 innings, giving up five earned runs and nine hits. He (2-3) had one strikeout and one walk in the contest.

Ryan Dennick (3-0) earned the win for the Golden Eagles after pitching five full innings and giving up one run on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Sophomore Packy Elkins’ (Raleigh, N.C.) career-long hitting streak ended at 13 games in the contest.

Tennessee Tech scored the first run of the contest on a groundout to first base by Chad Oberacker which scored Jake New.

The Golden Eagles increased the lead to 3-0 with two runs in the top of the second inning with the first run coming on a double down the right field line by Matt Mihoci which scored Evan Webb.

Belmont mounted a comeback in the bottom of the fifth inning to score their first run of the game to make the score 3-1 in favor of Tennessee Tech. The run came on a sacrifice fly to right field by freshman Derek Hamblen (Plano, Texas) scoring freshman Matt Zeblo (Raleigh, N.C.).

The Golden Eagles answered with three runs in the top of the sixth inning and a run in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 7-1.

Belmont scored its final two runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning on a two-RBI triple to right center by McCall which scored Hamblen and Zeblo.

The freshman catcher also had a career-high three hits in the game.

Tennessee Tech finished the scoring for the game with five runs in the top of the eighth inning and one run in the top of the ninth.

The Bruins will return to action against Vanderbilt on Apr. 23 at Greer Stadium in Nashville, Tenn. starting at 6 p.m.
